The
village of Alderton is hidden away from main roads, nestling under Alderton
Hill (also known as Dumbleton Hill to those living in Dumbleton on the
other side!). There is a mixture of housing with many old beamed cottages.
We have a lovely Norman church, our own junior school, pub, post office
and stores.
During
the 17th and early 18th century the village was used by the glove-making
industry as an "out-worker" village. Gloves were cut out in
Worcester factories and sent out to the villages.
There they would be sewn together by hand with the aid of a piece of apparatus
called a ''Glover's Donkey'' The completed gloves were then returned to
the factory for distribution. The princely sum of 5/- for one dozen pairs
was paid for the great deal of sewing involved - each glove took 3 hours
to make.
The structure of the village is also based around glove-making. It was
built in a circle so that the horses and carts would not have to turn
around when making their deliveries and collections.
